Book Review: Artificial Intelligence and English Language Teaching: Preparing for the Future

This review examines the book Artificial Intelligence and English Language Teaching: Preparing for the Future (2024) by Adam Edmett, Neenaz Ichaporia, Helen Crompton, and Ross Crichton. Published by the British Council, the book provides a comprehensive exploration of the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into English Language Teaching (ELT). Drawing on a review of ten years of empirical studies, survey responses from 1,348 teachers across 118 countries, and insights from key stakeholders, the authors analyze the opportunities, challenges, and future directions of AI in ELT. The book highlights the positive impact of AI on language skills development, personalized learning, autonomous learning, assessment practices, and classroom pedagogy. It also addresses concerns related to plagiarism, overreliance on AI, ethical considerations, and the potential replacement of teachers. The authors argue that AI should complement rather than replace traditional teaching methods and emphasize the need for AI literacy, professional training, and ethical guidelines. The review concludes that the book is a valuable resource for educators, researchers, and policymakers interested in the evolving role of AI in language education.
